ROCKEFELLER CENTER
The 22-acre Rockefeller Center is a world unto itself, filled with stunning Art Deco architecture, iconic artwork, shops and restaurants, studio tours, panoramic viewing platforms, and more. It became a bold symbol of hope when it was built during the Great Depression; today, it endures as one of the city’s most impressive landmarks. This tour covers the highlights; visit www.rockefeller-center.com for information on specialized tours.
Take the E train to the Fifth Ave.–53rd St. station and walk south on Fifth Ave. to St. Patrick’s Cathedral (1), a sumptuous Gothic creation that remains one of the largest cathedrals in the world. Across the street is the massive bronze Atlas sculpture (2). Continue south, noting the golden figures above the door of the British Empire Building (3; 620 Fifth), which represent the former Empire’s various forms of bounty (wool, tobacco, cotton, and so on). Beyond it, the Maison Française (4; #610) has “Liberté, Égalité, Fraternité” emblazoned above the entrance. Stroll down the aptly named Channel Gardens into the heart of Rockefeller Center. Ahead of you looms 30 Rock (5), the complex’s centerpiece structure. In the sunken plaza below is the golden statue of Prometheus, god of fire. Admire the building’s Art Deco entrance, then head inside to view the murals that decorate the interior. NBC’s Today Show and Saturday Night Live are both filmed here. Head up to the Top of the Rock Observation Deck for breathtaking views, or head down to the underground concourse for some shopping. Exit onto Avenue of the Americas. Turn left to enjoy a cupcake from renowned Magnolia Bakery (6; 1240 Avenue of the Americas). Or turn right to view icon Radio City Music Hall (7); fans should inquire about the Stage Door Tour. Catch the B/D/F train in front.
